In the current gaming landscape, an increasing number of games and simulators incorporate head tracking technology, a feature that captures and interprets head movement through a tracking system which determines the pose based on six degrees of freedom (6DOF). This head pose is subsequently processed and filtered by applications like FaceTrackNoIR, which enhances minor head movements to correspond with larger in-game actions by adjusting the virtual camera perspective. This functionality has made head trackers a popular choice among gamers, many of whom utilize webcam-based systems.

FacePoseApp distinguishes itself by utilizing smartphones as advanced face trackers, providing significant advantages over traditional webcam setups. Notably, it eliminates the need for a separate webcam purchase while also conserving CPU and GPU resources on the gaming PC, which would otherwise be dedicated to tracking functions. Furthermore, devices such as smartphones and iPads (from iPhone 6S onwards) are capable of supporting higher frame rates, often exceeding 30 frames per second, enhancing performance during gameplay.

With FacePoseApp, the 6DOF data is transmitted to an external program via Wi-Fi or USB; this latter capability requires an in-app upgrade. However, even without the upgrade, users can evaluate the tracker’s performance and assess the communication link with their PC.
